The Perfect Location: As close as your own backyard!

As an “On Location” photographer, one of the big things my clients need to decide on when booking a session is the location they would like to use. I have several places that I recommend and have shot at frequently, but I LOVE it when my clients recommend a new place. I gotta be honest though…the first time I had a client suggest we do their session in their backyard, I was a little nervous. I think I was envisioning my own backyard which is not exactly photogenic and would require A LOT of creativity to capture the beautiful images I strive to always deliver to my clients. If there’s one thing I learned about locations though, it’s that not all “backyards” are the same and I have been extremely blessed with clients with some AMAZING backyards!

The family session above was actually of a good friend of mine. The first time I visited her to see her new home I knew from the moment we pulled in her (very long) drive that I wanted to take photos there someday. Not only did I take photos of her beautiful family, but she was kind enough to allow me to do my Christmas mini sessions there last year and I photographed 3 other families there as well. Serious backyard envy going on here!2018-08-24_0004.jpg
2018-08-24_0005.jpgThis Senior Session started in Nick’s front and backyard. Unlike most of the beautiful backyards I have shot at, Nick’s house is in the city and I’m not gonna lie, when I looked up his address on Google Maps and saw it was in a subdivision in town I was pretty worried that they were going to expect me to pull of a miracle in a mediocre location at best. As soon as I drove down their street and saw the field of tall trees at the end my worries disappeared though. This yard was full of more surprises too including a pond and lots of trees in the back. What a great place to live…really the best of both worlds.2018-08-24_0010.jpg

This is another Senior Session in the client’s backyard and mom is another friend of mine. Kylie actually had two Senior Sessions…a summer session in downtown Kansas City (which was HOT) and a fall session at her own home. I loved them both, but it was fun to see how much more relaxed and natural clients are when shooting at home and I think these images showed that. Beautiful girl and another beautiful yard!2018-08-24_0006.jpg

By the time I did Stephanie and Kyle’s engagement session, I had seen enough beautiful yards to be over my fear of shooting in them and after a visit to their home for a newborn session for their adorable little girl, I actually was the one who recommended we do their engagement session there. I loved the long gravel path, rusty fence, tree stumps and grassy field and knew we weren’t going to find anything better…or closer!

And last but certainly not least A WEDDING! This wedding actually took place prior to the other beautiful backyards pictured above so I was still leery of them and pretty nervous about the idea of shooting a wedding at the Groom’s parent’s house. Until I met up with them there for a consultation. Not only was the backyard ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, but the work the family put into making it just perfect for a wedding was unbelievable! From lining the path to a tree-lined open pasture where the ceremony would take place with mulch and candles, to the swing in the woods decorated in vines and the twinkle lights hung over the lovely reception area. They thought of it all! One of the most beautiful weddings I have had the pleasure of shooting!

It just goes to show you, sometimes the best locations aren’t the most obvious. If you have a beautiful backyard or a friend or family member who does and would be happy to let you shoot there, give me a call! I would love to try it out and create some beautiful memories for you!

Kansas City High School Senior Photographer: Drake

I met Drake and his mom in the Crossroads Art District for his Senior Session. It was a pretty hot evening and they were troopers hiking around with me from one location to the next and trusting that my “vision” would be worth it. I love this part of town and will be the first to admit I can get a little excited and carried away trying to fit in all of the cool spots and ideas but I think it paid off. I love Senior guy sessions. I love how low maintenance and “chill” they are and I love the subtle look they give me when I recommend a pose or idea that there is no way they are going to do. I also love how they aren’t sure what to do in the beginning but then start falling into natural and relaxed poses by the end. Drake was an awesome model and cool kid. He’s planning to study abroad in Germany and I think he’s got many more big adventures in his future. Who knows…maybe modeling? 😉2018-08-14_0001.jpg

Grain Valley High School Senior Photographer: Cole

There are a few last minute Senior sessions every year and I am always thankful for them. Certain types of sessions tend to happen at certain times of the year and I often end up doing a whole bunch of them in a short period of time and then none for a long time. I always enjoy a random session at a non-typical time of year when the weather, clothing, and scenery is all different. This was a kind of cold and rainy day but it worked out well for Cole’s Senior Session in the West Bottoms.2018-04-30_0001.jpg

Blue Springs, MO High School Senior Photographer: Nate C

It’s hard to believe it’s been 3 years since I did Senior photos for this guy’s beautiful sister Hannah. I was so happy to hear from this family when they contacted me again to do Nate’s Senior photos. Such a great family to work with…they make my job easy!   I think it’s obvious here in Nate’s photos that the camera loved them too.

It was interesting how similar Nate and Hannah’s sessions were. We did both of them at multiple, contrasting locations. Also for both of them one of the locations we had originally picked out ended up having an event on their session date and we had to come up with an alternative location somewhat last-minute.

Nate is in the Blue Springs High School Golden Regiment and it was fun to incorporate his drumsticks in several of his images. Due to the location change we also tried out a new “woodsy” location and I think it worked well!

Good Luck to Nate in the future! I have no doubt you are going to do great things!

Grain Valley, Mo High School Senior Photographer: Nathan R

I feel so blessed to have had so many great High School Senior Sessions this year and this one was no exception. We were lucky to have such a beautiful day at Unity Village. It’s hard to believe this was just few weeks ago considering the change in the weather and how many leaves are now on the ground instead of on the trees! It reminded me how quickly time goes by and how all of these wonderful Seniors I have had the honor of working with lately were their parent’s tiny babes “just yesterday”.

Nathan was lucky to have both of his parents along for his session so we grabbed a few family photos too. I know they will be precious treasures as the future brings changes and makes it harder for everyone to get together. Congratulations Nathan and to the class of 2018!
