Blue Springs High School Senior Photographer: Anastasia

This was such a great High School Senior Session in the Crossroads Art District. I will admit, when Anastasia’s parents texted me the address of where they would like to meet to get started, I was slightly concerned. I have done a TON of sessions at Crossroads, but never had been to this particular area and unlike my “usual spots” a few blocks away, there wasn’t much to look at at first glance. But like most sessions where I try out new spots, this turned out to be a favorite. When I do a session in a tried and true location, it’s easy to head toward the “good spots” that I know will look great. But when I’m in a new location I love how it gets the creative juices flowing and looking for pretty light, complimentary colors, things like ivy on a building and hidden treasures like the amazing graffiti alley and murals turn a session into a treasure hunt.

Anastasia was amazing to work with too! With every click of the camera she was moving and mixing up poses giving me so many great shots in every single area. Oh, and be sure to check out her glitter shots. She brought purple glitter but it was a little warm that day and most of the glitter stuck to her hands so photoshop to the rescue! #notashamed #Igotskills 😉

High School Senior Photographer: Dakota

This has been a very full Senior season already and at some point while walking around with these High School Seniors and their parents (usually moms) it hit me. I could almost feel what these mamas were feeling. These sessions are just one of the many things they will be checking off their Senior year “To Do” list. And it is bittersweet. They are watching their children smile and pose for my camera and in their mind they may be imagining how it seemed like just yesterday they were getting their kindergarten school photos taken or even toddler portraits. But now they are these “almost adult” people…all grown up and leaving the nest soon.

I know this beautiful girl and her mom personally and know that this year will be a tough on mama. Although Dakota looks like a grown up, gorgeous young woman, she is also the baby of the family and the last one to leave the nest. I know she is off to accomplish great and exciting things though and this isn’t the end of anything…just a new and exciting chapter for her and her family!2018-10-01_0001.jpg

Blue Springs, MO Maternity Photographer: The “G” Family

Sometimes everything about a session just falls into place and this Maternity session was one of those times. The couple decided on Burr Oak Woods as the location which is one of my favorite places to shoot. It was a sunny day though which can sometimes be a challenge there, but I realized it was a blessing as we entered the deep woods and the sun was glowing through the trees on the other side. I also decided just before this session that I needed to make a flower headband for it. I don’t know why, it just seemed like the thing to do so I went to Hobby Lobby and picked some neutral fallish colors and threw it together. I had no idea what color this pretty mama-to-be was wearing at the time so this was pure “Happy Accident” which if you know or follow me at all, you know is one of my favorite things (and the name of my personal Blog). I so love the way this session turned out. I also can’t stop thinking about how great some of these images would look on my new Fine Art Wood Canvases. Hmmmmm.2018-09-21_0002.jpg

Blue Springs, MO High School Senior Photographer: Hope

Hope is my second 2019 Senior. I had a great time walking around the always beautiful Loose park with her and her mom (even though it was a HOT one). Hope has such an easy beauty about her and was an absolute pleasure to photograph. This lovely location suited her so well! This Senior Season is off to a fantastic start!2018-09-07_0001.jpg

The Perfect Location: As close as your own backyard!

As an “On Location” photographer, one of the big things my clients need to decide on when booking a session is the location they would like to use. I have several places that I recommend and have shot at frequently, but I LOVE it when my clients recommend a new place. I gotta be honest though…the first time I had a client suggest we do their session in their backyard, I was a little nervous. I think I was envisioning my own backyard which is not exactly photogenic and would require A LOT of creativity to capture the beautiful images I strive to always deliver to my clients. If there’s one thing I learned about locations though, it’s that not all “backyards” are the same and I have been extremely blessed with clients with some AMAZING backyards!

The family session above was actually of a good friend of mine. The first time I visited her to see her new home I knew from the moment we pulled in her (very long) drive that I wanted to take photos there someday. Not only did I take photos of her beautiful family, but she was kind enough to allow me to do my Christmas mini sessions there last year and I photographed 3 other families there as well. Serious backyard envy going on here!2018-08-24_0004.jpg
2018-08-24_0005.jpgThis Senior Session started in Nick’s front and backyard. Unlike most of the beautiful backyards I have shot at, Nick’s house is in the city and I’m not gonna lie, when I looked up his address on Google Maps and saw it was in a subdivision in town I was pretty worried that they were going to expect me to pull of a miracle in a mediocre location at best. As soon as I drove down their street and saw the field of tall trees at the end my worries disappeared though. This yard was full of more surprises too including a pond and lots of trees in the back. What a great place to live…really the best of both worlds.2018-08-24_0010.jpg

This is another Senior Session in the client’s backyard and mom is another friend of mine. Kylie actually had two Senior Sessions…a summer session in downtown Kansas City (which was HOT) and a fall session at her own home. I loved them both, but it was fun to see how much more relaxed and natural clients are when shooting at home and I think these images showed that. Beautiful girl and another beautiful yard!2018-08-24_0006.jpg

By the time I did Stephanie and Kyle’s engagement session, I had seen enough beautiful yards to be over my fear of shooting in them and after a visit to their home for a newborn session for their adorable little girl, I actually was the one who recommended we do their engagement session there. I loved the long gravel path, rusty fence, tree stumps and grassy field and knew we weren’t going to find anything better…or closer!

And last but certainly not least A WEDDING! This wedding actually took place prior to the other beautiful backyards pictured above so I was still leery of them and pretty nervous about the idea of shooting a wedding at the Groom’s parent’s house. Until I met up with them there for a consultation. Not only was the backyard ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, but the work the family put into making it just perfect for a wedding was unbelievable! From lining the path to a tree-lined open pasture where the ceremony would take place with mulch and candles, to the swing in the woods decorated in vines and the twinkle lights hung over the lovely reception area. They thought of it all! One of the most beautiful weddings I have had the pleasure of shooting!

It just goes to show you, sometimes the best locations aren’t the most obvious. If you have a beautiful backyard or a friend or family member who does and would be happy to let you shoot there, give me a call! I would love to try it out and create some beautiful memories for you!
