Blue Springs, Mo Family Photographer: One BIG (mostly) happy family

What do you get when you take 2 grandparents, 6 adult children, 5 spouses, 21 grandchildren, a very hot, sticky morning with brutal and harsh sun and 1 photographer? Well, in this case, I would say some great family photos. When Abby contacted me to see if I was available short notice because her brother was going to be in home on leave from the military and they didn’t get very many opportunities to get photos of the whole family, of course I said I would be happy to help out. When she said her family was big (34 people big to be exact), I didn’t shy away at all. To me, the only thing different about doing sessions with very large families is the expectations. With small families I work hard making sure everyone is happy, looking at the camera and their eyes are open. We walk around capturing different backgrounds, maybe some candid shots. That’s what is expected. With large families like this one I take it minute by minute and let the session direct me instead of the other way around. With this many little people, there aren’t very many moments that everyone is happy at once so I look for those moments and take advantage of them. The sun was hot and bright and would cause hot, unhappy little bodies, shadows under eyes, squinty or closed eyes, and blown out (too bright) backgrounds so when I found a shady spot that fit the whole family I decided the best bet was to just stay there and rotate people in and out. There wasn’t a whole lot to work with to mix things up and get artistic shots which is hard for me to just let go of in a session, but again…the expectation was different. For this session it was to capture this big, beautiful family all together if only for a moment, and hopefully these images will bring back memories of all of their fun times during this visit together for many years to come.

Kansas City Engagement Photographer: M&C Downtown KC

This was a really fun engagement session that started off in the West Bottoms. I’ve done a ton of senior sessions here, and a couple of family sessions, but this was my first engagement session and I think it was perfect for them! Then we headed over to Liberty Memorial where this couple showed everyone that opposites attract with their rival team apparel. I am so excited for their wedding!2018-07-09_0001.jpg

Warrensburg Wedding Photographer: The Brockhaus Wedding

I’m not sure how or why I waited so long to blog this beautiful wedding but it’s sooo worth the wait. This was the second daughter (of three) from this family who’s wedding I was fortunate enough to photograph and it was perfect just like her sister’s. Seriously a wonderful family and they have found wonderful husbands as well! This was the first wedding I have done in Warrensburg and I absolutely loved the venue…Milestones Barn. Such a fun wedding and fun time working with this family again. I look forward to working with them again in the future. The third sister caught the bouquet so…who knows?2018-06-02_0001.jpg

Blue Springs Mo Maternity Photographer: The H Family

I know I say it every time, but my absolute favorite part of my job is watching families and clients grow and change and being there to capture all of the milestones along the way for them. One of the most fun things I often notice is how sometimes at that first session they are unsure of how to stand, should they smile or not?, what should they do with their hands?, etc. After shooting this family for an engagement session, being with them all day for their wedding and now their maternity session…they are seriously pros. Especially little man who LOVES the camera (and it loves him too) and may have a future as an actor or model in my opinion. Can’t wait to meet the newest member of their beautiful family!2018-05-26_0001.jpg

Blue Springs, Mo Family Photographer: The S Family

Every session has a story. With some it may seem obvious…an engagement session is two people who have been dating for a while and are going to get married soon. But there is always more to the story. How did they meet?, what do they do for fun?, are they both excited for their session or did she drag him there…or vice versa? There is always a story. Sometimes clients share their stories and sometimes details come out during their session. Either way I always leave a session feeling honored that I was given a peek into my clients’ lives and trusted to capture a significant moment for them. I will be the first to admit I have a pretty terrible short term memory. When shooting large groups or wedding parties, I often find myself forgetting names almost immediately after they are given to me. But I remember my clients and I remember their stories. This session was special in a lot of ways. It was taken just before Mother’s Day and was the perfect tribute to the love between a Mother and Daughter. Lots of hubby/wife love too. It’s one I will remember for sure and hopefully a family I will get to see again for sessions in the future. Oh and check out the beautiful dresses my client designed and made years ago! As someone who has zero talent in that department, I’m super impressed!
